HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES IN CALGARY

MEDICAL SERVICES

There are 4 hospitals and 7 auxiliary hospitals. There are also a number of emergency clinics around town and a list of these clinics is listed in the "Yellow Pages" under "Clinics". There are 22 nursing homes in the city, generally privately owned, for the care of those requiring aid in daily living.

Alberta Health Care Insurance is compulsory medical insurance coverage. It is required each time you visit a doctor or dentist. You should apply for your insurance within 30 days of arrival in Alberta. Forms can be obtained and applications made at Main Floor, 727 - 7th Ave, SW. Phone: 297-6411

SOCIAL SERVICES

Social Services in Calgary are provided through the Provincial Government, the City of Calgary and a number of voluntary agencies. The provincial government administrates the statutory services out of five Calgary district offices. These services include public assistance, child welfare, adoption, and A.I.S.H. (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped). The City of Calgary Social Services Department provides probation counseling, community development, and monitors day care services from various area offices throughout the city. In addition, Calgary has numerous private agencies sponsored under the Family and Community Support Services Program and/or private financing.

These services cover a wide range including Senior Citizen's Programs, Youth Programs, Special Counseling Services, Crisis Intervention Programs, Employment Programs and Nation Programs. Some of the services employ a user fee while others are offered free of charge.

CHURCHES

There is a wide variety of churches in Calgary over 450, representing the majority of religions. All churches are listed under Church Organizations in the "Yellow Pages".

DAYCARE

There are numerous daycare centers in Calgary that will take children from infant to 12 years of age. Most provide nourishing hot meals, arts and crafts, teaching of numbers and the alphabet, and even toilet training. Prices do vary considerably depending on the services, amount of time required, or location. There is some subsidizing of costs available to single parent or low income families through the Alberta Government. Forms for this service are available from the respective daycare.
